Quebecers Vacationing in Québec

Montréal, June 10, 2014 – Statistics show that 67% of Quebecers who go on vacation do so in Québec, and that the majority (64%) visits the province in the summer. Québec travellers are particularly fond of getaways (81%), i.e. stays lasting three nights or fewer, while close to 40% of respondents went on vacations lasting four nights or more. This is the conclusion drawn thanks to the Étude de marché touristique intra-Québec (Intra-Québec tourism market study) conducted by TNS with an OmniWeb survey of 4,400 respondents on behalf of various partners, the ATR associées du Québec and regional tourism associations as well as the Société des Attractions Touristiques du Québec (SATQ).

The ATR associées du Québec and the SATQ joined voices to invite Quebecers to continue vacationing in Québec. In addition to discovering the rich diversity and unique personality of Québec's 22 tourist regions, Quebecers who travel in the province contribute to the vitality of a business sector and to economic prosperity. "For Québec's tourist regions, visits from Quebecers represent a high proportion of traffic. Their average spending per travel unit totals $1,217 per summer vacation and $886 per summer getaway and contributes to job creation all over Québec", said François-G. Chevrier, President and Director General of ATR associées du Québec.

In the summer, Quebecers take part in an average of five activities on vacation and an average of three on getaways. Old Québec, the Rocher Percé and the St. Lawrence for whale-watching are their three favourite tourism destinations. "In addition to being a driving economic force throughout Québec, our tourist attractions stir up emotions and become reasons for travel. Let us be proud of our attractions, festivals and our tourism products! The development and growth of SMEs in the tourism industry are supported by Quebecers", said Pierre-Paul Leduc, Director General of SATQ.

The Importance of Tourism in Québec
According to data from the Association québécoise de l'industrie touristique, tourism is ranked 3rd among exports, representing 2.5% of the GDP and generating $12.8 billion in annual revenue. In contrast, the government only spends 0.2% of its budget on tourism. Each public dollar invested in tourism generates five dollars for the State, making this sector one of the least expensive to develop and one of the most profitable in terms of job creation.

The Étude de marché touristique intra-Québec was conducted in 2013 in cooperation with several tourism industry partners: ATR associées du Québec, Société des Attractions Touristiques du Québec, Tourisme Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Tourisme Bas-Saint-Laurent, Tourisme Centre-du-Québec, Charlevoix Tourism, Tourisme Chaudière-Appalaches, Tourisme Côte Ι Nord-Duplessis, Tourisme Côte-Nord Ι Manicouagan, Tourism Eastern Townships, Tourisme Lanaudière, Tourisme Laurentides, Tourisme Laval, Tourisme Mauricie, Outaouais Tourism, Tourisme Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean, the Office du tourisme de Québec, and Tourisme Montérégie.
